How Do Heat Pump Systems Work?

Heat Pumps have two parts: an indoor unit, called an air handler, and an outdoor unit, known as a heat pump. Heat pumps use electricity to circulate refrigerant between the two units, which transfers heat away from a cool space, further cooling it and warming the other area.

Because Heat pump systems move heat rather than create it, they can operate at as little as a quarter of the cost of a traditional system. They also remove humidity from the air better than traditional systems, which lowers energy use and creates cooling comfort when you need it most.

How Do I Select the Right Heat Pump for my Portland Home?

If you're considering a heat pump system for your home, there are a few things to know:

  • SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and is an efficiency rating for cooling systems. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency.
  • HSPF stands for Heating Season Performance Factor and is a measure of a heating system’s efficiency. Again, the higher the rating, the more efficient the system.
  • A Decible Rating refers to how loudly a Heat Pump does its work. Through extensive testing, Ruud has designed its Heat Pumps to be among the quietest available.
  • Your System Size is also important! We can help you determine the best size system for your space so you make the most of an efficient system without spending more than you need.
